Win Big at poker – but spend big with someone else’s money!
After a recent big, and I mean big, win at the poker table I was sitting at the bar having a drink before leaving for home. One of the guys I was with went off to the bathroom and, whilst he was gone, the cell phone rang and buzzed – as I always have my phone on ring and vibrate. Being an owner of what was then one of the first iPhones around I proudly picked it up and answered.
After a good poker win – why not spend a bit?
“How did the game go honey?” was the first thing I heard. Feeling somewhat relieved that it wasn’t one of the more dreaded questions like “Where are you?”; I promptly replied that I was just having a drink after a very successful poker session. Needless to say the next question came down the line “Oooh – how much?”. Now I’m quite a modest sort of guy and certainly didn’t want to sit at the bar bragging with other guys listening in; after all I want to try and take some more money off them next time. “Well” I said feeling here’s an opportunity to score some brownie points “You know how you want to change your car ….”. Which immediately did the trick and sparked what can only be described as a bidding war.
How about a new auto?
Her opening gambit was for a Mercedes S-Class convertible at $60,000! Mmm – nice car but a bit above the winnings really. The next bid simply went too low at $15,000 for a Kia Rio! Sure enough, next bid was right on the button a $40,000 Buick Enclave, a great SUV we can both enjoy driving; also leaving me just a ‘few’ poker dollars to indulge myself too. Needless to say I’d earned myself quite a few brownie points on that one, and we signed off with all the usual cooing and comments. I cancelled the call and put the phone down.
Do all iPhones look the same?
Just then the other guy returned from the bathroom and picked up the iPhone. Before I could say “Hey – that’s mine” he said “Wish I’d got your poker winnings in my bank – thought I’d check to see if I missed a call” and at exactly the same moment my iPhone started to ring and buzz in my pocket ….
